written by Doug Brzak
I was visiting a friend who was in the hospital and watched the Oprah Winfrey show with her. Oprah's guests that day were relatives of service men who had recently been killed during military action abroad.
The relatives were sharing the very last letter their loved ones had sent. I got the idea that night for THANKS TO HIM I CAN.

He grew up hearing stories of different times and different wars
From an uncle and a cousin and those who'd gone before
All about rightin' wrongs and believin' there's a job to do
Now he's willing to step up to the plate and pinch-hit for me and you

He's from Anywhere, U.S.A. American-born and raised
When he punches in it's just another one of them twenty-four hour days
He was just a boy ‘til he made the choice to walk in the boots of a man
He ain't goin' home tonight THANKS TO HIM I CAN

He passed her notes in high school was it just six months ago?
Each night he writes her by flashlight ‘til the batteries run too low
He was on his way to college then had a change of plans
She’s trusting his decision and tryin’ to understand

He's from Anywhere, U.S.A. American-born and raised
When he punches in it's just another one of them twenty-four hour days
He was just a boy ‘til he made the choice to walk in the boots of a man
He ain't goin' home tonight THANKS TO HIM I CAN

He’s ready for every challenge there's no room for second best
His mom and dad watch the news they hold hands and hold their breath
All he's gonna want at the end of his tour
Is a "welcome home" and a piece of the future that he's helped secure

He's from Anywhere, U.S.A. American-born and raised
When he punches in it's just another one of them twenty-four hour days
He was just a boy ‘til he made the choice to walk in the boots of a man
He ain't goin' home tonight THANKS TO HIM I CAN

NO, HE AIN’T GOIN’ HOME TONIGHT, THANKS TO HIM I CAN!
